As for the subjects of their suspicion…

“Why did you bring this to my house?! Throw it away!”

“I wish I could! I just can’t! Too many memories! I can’t just declutter it!”

Alka had brought the Statue of Love—her own creation—to Marie’s shop.

Shortly after Lloyd had left to prep the maid café, Alka had appeared with a nine-foot-tall thing. Marie had sleepily stubbed her toe on it, looked up, and screamed—bothering the neighbors again.

Alka had tried to ditch it and had run, but had been caught, and they’d been arguing ever since.

“Why does it have to be here?! Drop that crap in Kunlun! And this is an exhibit for the Military Festival, right?”

“If I put it in Kunlun, the villagers will all get curious and ask too many questions, and if I say nothing, they’ll decide it wards off evil or is some sort of weapon, and there’s nothing more horrifying than hearing people’s interpretations of your art!”

“You’re not even making sense! Argh, I thought this romantic event might actually get me somewhere, but this lump of rock’s so ugly that if I hauled it to a museum, they’d charge me a disposal fee!”

Unaware that this “art” was supposed to be displayed at that romantic event, Marie was cheerily trash-talking it. So much for its blessings. (It never had any.)

Alka was looking grumpier by the second, but Marie kept on the attack.

“They’ll be in a panic by now! Give it back!”

“It’s mortifying! I can’t let it be displayed in public! I’ll give it back after the festival…so keep it until then!”

“I can’t have something this imposing in my shop! No one would ever come back!”

“No one ever comes here anyway. I’m gonna go hit up the festival! After I get my fieldwork done. You go on ahead!”

“No, wait! Kid grandma! No, owwww! My leg cramped!”

That rune curse was still in effect.

Marie rolled across the floor, hit her head on the statue, and groaned some more.

“Runes are far too strong now that I have my power back,” Alka said, giving her a look of pity. “But this is my chance to skedaddle!”

She whipped out a crystal and vanished back to Kunlun, leaving Marie huddled on the floor, crying.

The bells of noon rang empty in her ears.
